Historical standard for APA style continues using Times New Roman 12-point font.
However, additional styles which are now acceptable are: Calibri 11-point, Ariel 11-point, Lucida Sans Unicode 10-point, Georgia 11-point, and Computer Modern (10-point) used by LaTeX.
Verify with assignment guidelines, course instructor, thesis/dissertation guidelines, or journal author guidelines.
Line spacing
Everything is double-spaced, no extra blank lines between references or paragraphs. If using Word, recommend start with No Spacing, then change font, as Word inserts an extra half-line between paragraphs & within references.
However, variations are allowed for tables (see Chapter 7).
Page numbers & Running head
Student Paper includes only page numbers in upper-right corner beginning with title page.
Professional Paper includes page numbers in upper-right corner beginning with title page, & running head in upper-left corner beginning with title page.
Spacing between sentences
Only one space following end of sentence punctuation before the next sentence. Also, if a sentence ends with punctuation other than a period, do not add a period at the end.
Hyphenation
If two sets of words are hyphenated but split, include the hyphen for both.
Correct: pre- and post-test
Incorrect: pre and post-test
Also, be consistent using word forms. If you introduce pre-test using a hyphen, keep that form throughout manuscript; do not make it one word: pretest
Seriation (creating lists) see Manual Sections 6.49 through 6.52. If including within a paragraph, APA uses letters, not numbers.
Italicize & capitalize names of genera, species, and varieties (Section 6.22): Staphylococcus aureus
